Everyday Long Vest

Lion Brand® Cotton-Ease

GAUGE:

17 sts + 24 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette st.(k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

NOTES:

When working in Garter st, slip first st of each row for a smooth edge.

BACK
Cast on 85 (94, 102, 110, 119, 127) sts. Work 7 rows Garter st (k every row). Next row (WS) Work 4 Garter sts, St st to last 4 sts, 4 Garter sts. Work as established for 32 more rows.

Dec row (RS) K 1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, ssk, k 1. Repeat dec row every 20 rows 3 more times – 77 (86, 94, 102, 111, 119) sts. Cont in St st only until piece measures 20½ (20, 20, 19½, 19½, 19)" from beg, ending with a WS row. Shape Armhole Bind off 3 (4, 5, 6, 6, 7) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec row (RS) Work 4 Garter sts, k2tog, St st to last 6 sts, ssk, 4 Garter sts. Repeat dec every other row 8 (9, 10, 13, 15, 16) more times – 53 (58, 62, 64, 67, 71) sts. Work even until armhole measures 7 (7½, 8, 8½, 9, 9½)", ending with a RS row.

Next row (WS) Work 4 Garter sts, p 5 (7, 9, 10, 11, 12), work 35 (36, 36, 36, 37, 39) Garter sts, p 5 (7, 9, 10, 11, 12), work 4 Garter sts. Work even until armholes measure 8 (8 ½, 9, 9½, 10, 10½)", ending with a WS row.

Shape Shoulder and Back Neck Bind off 5 (5, 6, 6, 7, 7) sts at beg of next row, work 8 (10, 11, 11, 12, 13) sts, join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off center 27 (28, 28, 28, 29, 31) sts, work to end.

Next row (WS) Bind off 5 (5, 6, 6, 7, 7) sts at beg of row, work to end. Working both sides at same time, bind off 4 (5, 6, 6, 6, 7) sts at beg of next 4 (4, 2, 2, 4, 2) rows, bind off 0 (0, 5, 5, 0, 6) sts at beg of next 0 (0, 2, 2, 0, 2) rows.

LEFT FRONT
Cast on 45 (49, 53, 57, 62, 66) sts. Work 7 rows Garter st.

Next row (WS) Work 4 Garter sts, St st to last 4 sts, 4 Garter sts. Work as established for 32 rows more.

Dec row (RS) K 1, k2tog, St st to last 4 sts, 4 Garter sts for placket.

Rep dec row every 20 rows 3 more times – 41 (45, 49, 53, 58, 62) sts. Work even until piece measures 20½ (20, 20, 19½, 19½, 19)" from beg, ending with a WS row. Place marker at neck edge.

Shape Armhole and V-neck Bind off 3 (4, 5, 6, 6, 7) sts at beg of next row, work to last 6 sts, ssk, 4 Garter sts.

Next row (WS) Work 4 Garter sts, St st to last 4 sts, 4 Garter sts.

Next row (RS) Work 4 Garter sts, k2tog, St st to last 6 sts, ssk, 4 Garter sts. Shape shoulder Bind off 5 (5, 6, 6, 7, 7) sts at beg of next 1 (3, 2, 2, 1, 2) RS rows, then bind off 4 (0, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts at beg of next 2 (0, 1, 1, 2, 1) RS rows. Mark position for button.

RIGHT FRONT
Work as for Left Front, reversing shapings and working k2tog, yarn over for buttonhole in Garter st border opposite marker on Left Front.

FINISHING
Sew shoulders together. Sew side seams, leaving 6½" side slits. Weave in ends.
